Typically,
northeast trades blow 15-25 knots from November to March and 10 to 15 knots in the summer.
The best sailing on Grand Cayman is found at the east end of the island at the remote
Morritt's Tortuga Club, also the location of Cayman Windsurf Bic Center. Inside the reef,
one can enjoy shallow, flat-water cruising over a tropical aquarium - imagine laying into
a high speed gybe and instead of thinking about your foot-work, you're staring at the
colorful contours beneath you, wondering if it's a sting-ray following you or just your
own shadow! The reef stretches for about 4 miles along the east coast, creating an
extensive lagoon for long speed reaches.
More expert sailors can venture out a half-mile to the channel in the reef for some bump
and jump in the open ocean swells. Wave-riding in the channel is tricky because of strong
currents and sharp, coral reefs on both sides, not to mention the on-shore winds. Your
best bet is to get a local sailor to guide you further north to Collier's Channel where
there is easier access to some good wave-sailing or riding large swells. Going further
west, still on the north shore is Dead Man's Religion - the name speaks for itself, again,
ask for some local advice!
