Where to Eat

American
Blue Parrot, South Church St. at Coconut Harbour, (345) 949-9094. $-$$. Not necessarily the place to go for a quiet dinner, this restaurant boasts the island's largest TV screen. Order up grilled seafood, sandwiches, and salads for lunch and dinner.

Calico Jack's, North Church St., (345) 949-4373. $$. Dine under the light of the stars at this fun eatery located behind Calico Jack's Pirate Emporium. A weekly barbecue serves up chicken and all the fixin's; burgers are also a favorite. The nightly tarpon feeding is a good reason to stay a little longer.

Bars/Pubs
Hog Sty Bay Café and Pub, North Church Street at Mary Street, (345) 949-6163. $. Order up a half-pint of Tennent's Extra or Stone's Best Bitter at this bar that calls itself the best British pub for 5,000 miles. Along with an extensive beer selection and pub grub, the place keeps hopping with English Premier League football on weekends, darts on Monday and Wednesday, British comedies on the telly, and live music many nights. Pub menu includes steak and kidney pie, cod and chips, chicken and mushroom pie, bangers and mash, and shepherd's pie. Out on the patio, enjoy a menu featuring local seafood.

Ports Of Call Beach Bar, at The Wharf on West Bay Rd., (345) 949-2231. Located right on the water's edge, the open-air bar boasts an uninterrupted view of the setting sun. A school of huge tarpon usually lingers below the deck, waiting for scheduled handouts, and live music is offered most evenings.

Caribbean
Billy's Place, North Church Street, (345) 949-0470. $. Sample local favorites, such as fish Cayman style, jerk conch, conch stew, jerk pork, curry chicken, curry goat, ox tail, and stew beans, at this inexpensive eatery. Start with Samosa, an appetizer of flaky pastry stuffed with peas and potatoes and served with mint and mango chutney. Jerk burgers, jerk pizza, and Indian favorites, such as curry shrimp and chicken tikka (marinated chicken baked in a clay oven), round out the menu. Open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday; dinner only on Sundays.

Italian
Casanova Ristorante, Old Fort Building, (345) 949-7633. $$$. Specializing in romantic dining, this restaurant is decorated with Italian artwork. An extensive menu offers penne pasta sautéed with Caribbean lobster, linguine with clams, potato dumplings with homemade pesto sauce, veal piccata, and many seafood dishes. Open for lunch Monday through Saturday; dinner nightly. Reservations suggested.

Seafood
Crow's Nest, South Church Street, (345) 949-936. $$-$$$. West Indian favorites fill the menu here. Start with conch fritters or a jerk chicken sampler and then enjoy red bean soup or conch chowder. Entrées include Jamaican chicken curry, turtle farm steak topped with a peppery cream vermouth sauce, and red snapper, mahi mahi, mako shark, or swordfish prepared grilled, pan-fried, or blackened. Open for lunch Monday through Saturday, dinner daily.

Hog Sty Bay Café and Pub, North Church Street at Mary Street, (345) 949-6163. $$-$$$. Dine indoors or out on the seaside patio and this relaxed and fun café. Located within the pub (see above), the restaurant serves up a mix of seafood and steaks, as well as salads and soups. Most appetizers and entrées are prepared with an island flair, such as conch fritters, a red conch chowder that's a meal in itself, pan-fried red snapper, seafood pasta from hell (shrimp, scallops, lobster and fish in a hot and spicy citrus sauce), and favorites like coconut shrimp. Make reservations for seats on the patio, a great place to enjoy sunset.

Island Taste Restaurant and Lounge, Church Street, (345) 949-4945. $$. This open-air, second-floor restaurant is set across the street from the Atlantis Submarine office. Specializing in tropical and Mediterranean cuisine, the menu includes a wide variety of pasta dishes as well as lobster tail, conch steak, dolphin, snapper, and a daily captain's catch. Save room for the key lime pie. Open for lunch and dinner.

Lobster Pot, North Church Street. (345) 949-2736. $$$-$$$$. This second-floor restaurant, built with a view of the George Town Harbour, serves up seafood accompanied by an extensive wine list. Lobster and surf and turf are favorites, as well as grilled salmon filet, mango chicken, Cayman turtle steak, seafood curry, and cracked conch. Save this one for a special night out; prices are high, even by Cayman standards.

The Wharf, West Bay Rd., (345) 949-2231. $$$. Just past George Town at the start of the beach, The Wharf is a favorite with couples. This seaside restaurant and bar is open for lunch on weekdays and dinner nightly, featuring continental and Caribbean cuisine. Located right on the water's edge, the open-air bar offers an uninterrupted view of the setting sun. A school of huge tarpon waits below the deck, waiting for scheduled handouts, and live music is offered most evenings.
