Where to Stay

Hotels & Resorts

Sunset House Resort, (800) 854-4767, (345) 949-7111; fax (345) 949-7101. $-$$. Located just south of George Town, Sunset House is a favorite with divers. Just offshore lie both the reef and several shipwrecks, making this a virtual playground for those interested in underwater adventure. There's nothing fancy about Sunset House - it's designed for those whose vacation is the portion spent in the water, not necessarily on land. Guest rooms include standard accommodations overlooking the courtyard and deluxe rooms with ocean or garden views. Two suites are also available. Divers and those who want to learn can utilize the full-service dive operation, which offers resort courses, certification courses, check-out dives, and advanced instruction. When you're suited up and ready to go, it's just a matter of stepping off the shore ladder and into the aqua-playground. For more distant dives, six custom dive boats take divers on two-tank dives around the island while Manta, a catamaran, takes experienced divers on all-day, three-tank dives. Facilities at this 59-room resort include a restaurant featuring local and continental cuisine, gift shop, oceanfront bar, freshwater swimming pool and hot tub, full-service dive shop, six dive boats, and the Sunset Underwater Photo Centre, which offers half-day to week-long courses.

Condos & Small Inns

With just 18 guest rooms, the atmosphere is cozy and friendly. Rooms include air-conditioning, ceiling fans, private bath, telephone, cable TV, and daily maid service. Divers will be happy to note there's a dive shop; Ambassador Divers offers packages for guests that include daily boat dives and unlimited shore dives. The inn also has a restaurant, auto and moped rental agency, and bicycle rentals.

Guest Houses
Enterprise Bed and Breakfast, (345) 947-6009; fax (345) 716-8380. $. Located on Red Bay, this bed and breakfast carries the theme of - you guessed it - Star Trek. Facilities include a freshwater rinse station for scuba gear.

For reservations, contact the booking office at (818) 716-8380 or fax (818) 348-0433; mailing address for reservations is 5160 Llano Drive #I, Woodland Hills, CA 91364. Credit cards are not accepted; smoking is not permitted.

Erma Eldemire's Guest House, (800) 405-2187, (345) 949-5387; fax (345) 949-6987. $. Located one mile south of George Town, this guest house is a 10-minute walk from Smith Cove. Daily maid service, except on Sunday. Winter rates begin at US $65 for single and $70 for double occupancy, $80 for a studio apartment, and $100 for a one-bedroom apartment; summer rates start at $55.
