Adventures On Foot Departing from Salt Rock Bay (across from the dock on the north side of the island), the mile-long Salt Rock Nature Trail winds through natural habitat and is a favorite hike for birders and those interested in Little Cayman fauna. Look for the 17 endemic species plus orchids, bromeliads, cacti, and mahogany trees. Iguanas, blue land crabs, curly tailed lizards, and many of the island’s bird species are spotted as well. The trail winds past the old railroad that was constructed to serve a former phosphate mining business. Another highlight is Pirates Well, a cave fed by a freshwater well. Discovered in 1994, the cave has not yet been fully explored.
Guided tours of the island are led by Gladys Howard, National Trust Chapter Chairman and owner of the Pirates Point Resort. Tours are conducted every Sunday morning; for more information contact the Cayman Islands National Trust, % (345) 949-0121, or Gladys Howard, % (345) 948-1010. A CI $1 donation to the Little Cayman National Trust is asked.
Aside from guided hikes, Little Cayman presents travelers with plenty of walking and hiking opportunities. Almost non-existent traffic, a flat grade on all but the island’s easternmost end, and wide roads make Little Cayman perfect for a stroll or hike. Stroll the quiet streets of Blossom Village, the main road out to Tarpon Lake, or the island’s beautiful beaches. |
