Getting There

Arrival on Little Cayman is half the fun – you land in a cloud of dust. The dirt airstrip is next to a tiny one-room building that shades a desk and a phone; this is the Edward Bodden Airport. With twice-daily service from Grand Cayman, Island Air (% 345-949-5252, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; fax 345-949-7044) departs on the 45-minute flight at 8 a.m. and 3:50 p.m.; return flights depart at 9:55 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. Round-trip tickets are US $122 (US $98 for passengers under 12); a day trip package is also available for US $105 (US $84 for travelers under 12). Passengers may check up to 55 lbs of baggage free of charge; excess baggage is charged US 50¢ per pound.

Flights are also available on Island Air from Cayman Brac to Little Cayman and cost US $40, round-trip. Special fares are available for children under age 12.

Getting Around

Car Rentals

Only one rental car agency operates on the island. McLaughlin Jeep Rental (% 345-948-1000, fax 345-948-1001) offers daily and weekly rates for jeeps; only standard transmission jeeps are available. To call the rental agency on arrival, pick up the phone located on the side of the airport building. Vehicles are left-hand drive; driving is on the left side of the road. Rates start at US $59 daily. A Caymanian driver’s permit is required for rentals; obtain  one at McLaughlin’s for a US $7.50 fee. There is a 25 mph speed limit throughout the island.

Bicycling

Another popular mode of transportation is the bicycle. Guests will find that most resorts provide complimentary use of bicycles and, with practically no traffic on the roads, they offer a peaceful way to see the island, journey to a secluded beach, or pop into Blossom Village. The old cycles may not be the fastest vehicles, but, after all, this is Little Cayman. What’s the hurry?
